The secretary general of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitak Lim notes the leading role of Russia and the Russian Ministry of Transport in ensuring safe navigation in the water area of the Northern Sea Route. The head of IMO said it on November 27, 2017 in London during the meeting with the Russian delegation which visited the headquarters of IMO headed by the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Maxim Sokolov.
The Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation also participated in a meeting - the head of Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport Victor Olersky, the director of ministerial Department of state policy in the field of marine and river transport Vitaly Klyuev and the permanent representative of Russia in IMO Yury Melenas.
Sokolov thanked the secretary general for a recent visit to Russia and handed him a memorable album with photos of that trip and also a model of the Russian atomic ice breaker of new generation "Arktika" which will be put into operation in 2019, the Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport reports.
In his turn the secretary general for whom the meeting with the Russian minister became the first official event of the Assembly of IMO opening today, noted long-term Russian experience of navigation in waters of the Arctic and the significant contribution made by Russia in rule-making process of IMO.
According to the head of IMO, it is extremely important that Russia possesses the uniform system of regulation in the Arctic meeting the international standards. Kitak Lim has emphasized the leading role of Russia and its Ministry of Transport in ensuring safe navigation in the water area of the Northern Sea Route and as a sign of merits has presented to the Russian minister a special copy of the Polar code.
In conclusion of a meeting of the party have agreed with further strengthening of cooperation between Russia and IMO for the benefit of improvement of global regulation and forward development of sea branch.
