The official naming ceremony of two multipurpose rescue ships (Type MPSV06-NY) Beringov Proliv and Murman built for the Russian Ministry of Transport took place at Nordic Yards in Wismar on 19 February 2015. The construction contract for two multipurpose rescue ships was signed with the Federal Agency for Sega and River Transportation of the Russian Federation in December 2012.

Implementation of this project by Nordic Yards inaugurates the beginning of long-term and fruitful cooperation with the Russian Ministry of Transport on construction of specialized modern fleet for Russia.

Shipbuilding and Shiprepair

A New Shipbuilding Plant to be Built at Severnaya Verf (Northern Shipyard)
The candidates for design and surveys required for construction of a new shipbuilding plant at Severnaya Verf (Northern Shipyard) became known. Among them are St. Petersburg High-Rise and Underground Structures Design Bureau, Shipbuilding & Shiprepair Technology Centre and Rosengineering Project. According to the public procurement web-site, the initial price of the request for proposal is 549.3 million rubles.

Sevmash Executes the Government Defense Order 2014
The largest Russian defense shipyard Sevmash completely executed the planned scope of the government defense order last year. The shipyard handed over two nuclear submarines to the fleet last year: Severodvinsk, the first ship of the Yasen series, and Vladimir Monomakh, the third Borey-class submarine equipped with ballistic missiles.

 

Construction of the New Design Aircraft Carrier for the Russian Navy to Take 8 to 10 Years
Igor Kozhin, chief of the Russian Naval Aviation, declared that some research and development efforts were already completed and some projects for the ships of this class were developed. The rates of building the follow on ships may considerably increase in the future: construction of one ship will take 3 or 4 years. Earlier Viktor Bursuk, deputy commander of the Russian Navy, said that the new design Russian aircraft carrier would be built after 2030. The government weapon program does not make any provisions for construction of an aircraft carrier before 2020.

The Turkish Shipyard to Build Pechora Fishing Vessel for the Russian Region
A ceremony of metal cutting to lay down the Pechora fishing vessel for the Nenets Autonomous District took place at the Istanbul Shipyard. The contract for the construction of the fish trawler was signed with one of the largest Turkish shipbuilders – Tersan. The trawler hull will be ready in April 2015. The ship construction will be completed in 13 months. The new trawler is expected to start sailing in 2016.

Alrosa Submarine Undergoing Scheduled Repair and Modernization
The Alrosa diesel submarine of the Black Sea Fleet undergoes scheduled repair and partial modernization at the shiprepair plant No.13 of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. The submarine material will be modernized during the repair that will allow improving her specifications.

The Kanonersky Shiprepairing Yard Completed Planned Docking of St.Peter Line Passenger Ships
The Kanonersky Shiprepairing Yard completed planned docking of the St.Peter Line passenger ships. The Princess Anastasia ship was repaired in January and the Princess Maria ship in February. The repair was carried out under supervision of the Lloyd's classification society. The shipyard carried out the works on the hull, ship systems, the CPP propulsion system and the steering gear.

 

Russia and Angola Planning to Establish a Joint Shipbuilding and Shiprepair Venture
Russia and Angola plan to establish a joint shipbuilding and shiprepair venture. The parties showed their interest in the quickest establishment of a self-financing and self-support joint shipbuilding and shiprepair venture between Sudoimpex and Angolan Pescangola EP as a new type of cooperation.

The German Nordic Yards Considers a Possibility of Building its Own Shipyard in Russia
The Nordic Yards comprising three shipyards in Germany considers a possibility of building its own shipyard in Russia. According to the company owner Vitaly Yusufov, the company will examine the issue of building its own shipyard since the trend to increase localization increases with time. He also added that the possibility of cooperation with the Russian shipbuilders would be negotiated as well.

The Sea Port of St. Petersburg Transfers 35.3 Million Rubles on Social Programs
The Sea Port of St. Petersburg transferred 35.3 million rubles on implementation of the social program in 2014. The company's money was sent to support the employees and their families, sports, personnel training as well as to provide help to the children and retirees – members of the port's veteran’s organization.

 

MTE Kovosvit MAS to Deliver Equipment to the Baltic Shipyard
MTE Kovosvit MAS (the joint venture of the Russian MTE and Czech Kovosvit MAS) will deliver equipment priced at 45 million rubles to the Baltic Shipyard. According to the contract the shipyard will receive two CNC lathes. MTE Kovosvit MAS is said to be established on the basis of Donpressmash plant in Azov, Rostov Region.

Delivery of Mistral-Class Ships to Russia not on the Agenda
Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Defense of France, said that despite the ceasefire start in southeastern Ukraine the delivery of the Mistral-class ships to Russia was not on the agenda. The uncertainty with the ships started affecting the shipbuilders. DCNS responsible for construction of Mistral-class ships has to maintain the ship and pay the associated expenses on its own. The French experts estimate the expenses at 5 million Euros monthly.

Flag of the Russian Navy Auxiliary Ships Raised on a New Port Service Vessel of the Baltic Fleet
The flag of the Russian Navy auxiliary ships was raised on a new multipurpose port service vessel (Type BTH-74) that joined the fleet by order of the Commander-in-Chief at the main naval base of the Baltic Fleet in Baltiysk. The representatives of the Baltic Fleet command, the Baltic naval base and the auxiliary ship team took part in the official ceremony.

RS's Best Ships 2014
The ships built in 2014 under technical supervision of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping are highly appreciated by the experts of the British Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA). The Top Ships 2014 published by the classification society include three RS ships. The Veliky Novgorod large LNG carrier, the Berkarar ro-ro passenger ship and the Baltika multipurpose icebreaker with an asymmetric hull are recognized as the RS's best ships.

Alexander Obukhov Commencing Harbour Acceptance Trials
Built for the Russian Navy by Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard (St. Petersburg), the new generation lead mine countermeasures vessel Alexander Obukhov has commenced harbour acceptance trials. Sea acceptance trials will start in June and the state trials will start in September. The Alexander Obukhov will be inducted into the navy in November 2015.

Gogol Steamer Becoming Russia's Record Holder
The oldest wheeled-steamer N.V. Gogol was added to the Guinness Book of Records. The steamer which will turn 104 this year is still making summer cruises on the Northern Dvina. Tourist Information Centre in Arkhangelsk Region suggested adding the steamer to the Guinness Book of Records. On 16 February the wheeled-steamer was added to the Book of Records as the oldest wheeled-steamer in Russia making cruises. Every year she makes regular cruises on the Northern Dvina.

 

Astafiev Terminal Seaport in Primorsk Starts Receiving Panamax-Class Vessels
The Astafiev Terminal Seaport in Nakhodka successfully completed loading of the Chinese bulk carrier Zhe Hai 363 which became the largest vessel received in the history of the seaport. The bulk carrier took on board the Russian coal from the Kemerovo and Kuzbass Basins intended for the customer in India. The Zhe Hai 363 is a Panamax-class vessel, the largest class of the vessels which can pass the Panama Canal locks.

Shiprepair Plant No.82 to be Handed Over to Rosneft for Base Arrangement
The Government decided to establish supply bases for the Rosneft offshore projects on the basis of United Shipbuilding Corporation. The shipbuilding company will sell one of the shiprepair yards to the oilmen. The decisions made will allow to establish an onshore supply base for the Rosneft oil company offshore projects maintaining the United Shipbuilding Corporation capability to carry out repair and service maintenance of the Navy's ships and vessels.

Incidents and Accidents

Two Polish Naval Ships Collide in the Baltic Sea
Two Polish Navy's ships, Genera? Tadeusz Ko?ciuszko guided-missile frigate and Lech rescue vessel, collided during the maneuvers in the Baltic Sea. The ships were expected to participate in the maneuvers for the following week, but on Wednesday, the 18th of February, they had to return to the base in the Port of Gdynia due to the incident. Supposedly, the incident was caused by a mistake of one of the ships during maneuvering. An appointed committee will investigate the causes of the incident.

A Canadian Barge Drifting off the Coast of Chukotka Posing an Environmental Threat
The drifting barge may pose an environmental threat for the Chukchi Sea at the present moment. The Russian icebreaker fleet may rescue the ship from ice entrapment. But the operation may cost a few tens of millions of rubles and will take about three weeks as the closest icebreakers are now operating near Sakhalin.

Fort Azov Motor Ship Sinks in the Black Sea off the Coast of Turkey
On the night of 19 February the Russian bulk carrier Fort Azov, the ship in the Crimean black list, sank near Sinop. The ship with 3 thousand tons of sawn timber on board was sailing from Varna in storm conditions. The cargo shifted and, supposedly, partially fell outboard. The captain requested for help having reported on a great heel to portside. According to the information available, the Turkish rescuers saved 12 crew members, no one was hurt.

Foreign Colleagues

The US Paid About 2 Million Dollars to the Philippines for the Damaged Cay
The US paid 1.97 million dollars to the Philippines to compensate damage of the guarded cay. The Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs reported that the total amount requested was paid in January. The money will be spent on recovery and protection of the cay. The incident resulted in damage of corals at an area of more than 2345 sq.m.

UASC to Launch Operations in the North Atlantic in May
The Middle Eastern carrier United Arab Shipping Corp will launch operations in the North Atlantic in partnership with CMA CGM and Hamburg Sud. UASC will launch a weekly service from the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Havre, Southampton, New York, Norfolk, Charleston and Savannah in mid-May.

Kleven Shipyard Delivers a New Vessel to Eidesvik Company
The OSCV Viking Neptun vessel designed for underwater offshore operations was handed over to the customer – Eidesvik company. The official handover ceremony took place the day before at Kleven Verft Shipyard of Kleven group. The vessel was designed by the engineers of the Salt Ship Design Bureau. The OSCV Viking Neptun vessel is the largest vessel built by Kleven Verft Shipyard at the moment.

A Large Deep-Water Port to be Built in Alaska
The US Government plans to build a deep-water seaport in the administrative center Nome, Alaska, for servicing the arctic ships. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have public discussions on building a port in Nome which will become an initial step of the program on improving the infrastructure of the West and North Coast of Alaska. Nome is located on the coast, south of the Bering Strait and is the most convenient place for building an arctic port.

COSCO Declares Delivery of Three New Vessels
The Singapore shipbuilding company COSCO Corporation Limited declared delivery of three new vessels. The 150 m oil tanker Atalanta was built by Dalian Shipyard. The Zhoushan Shipyard handed over the 199.9 m bulk carrier to the customer – Arabellato Lomar Shipping. The oil platform supply vessel Terry Tide was launched at Guangdong Shipyard.
