Nowadays all seafarers are well trained and ready for operating their vessels under heavy weather conditions. However, port of Saint-Petersburg and Gulf of Finland are well known as deeply freezing areas and each winter season are fully covered with very thick ice sometimes reaching more than 1 meter thick. It is quite usual for Baltic sea when outside temperature falls down to even -20C degrees. Very low temperatures and freezing sea spray strengthen effect.
Ice navigation and manoeuvering in the ice, ship-to-ship and ship-to-icebreaker interaction, mutual assistance and communication requires special skills and sufficient training, which cannot be obtained during very short, mostly random calls to ice affected areas.
