Moscow and Washington agreed about establishment of the special traffic regulation of vessels in the Bering Strait, the corresponding joint note was prepared for sending to International Maritime Organization (IMO - the international intergovernmental organization, is specialized institution of the UN). The director of the department of state policy in the field of marine and river transport of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation Vitaly Klyuev told about it.
He pointed out that the USA and Russia in the Bering Strait have a water area under their joint jurisdiction. "And navigation there was in no way formalized. For a long time we conducted negotiations with Americans and at last came to an acceptable solution. We managed to agree at the level of the equipment, and we prepared a joint note for International Maritime Organization and soon enough have to bring it there," Klyuev told on Thursday at the meeting of presidium of Council for the Arctic and Antarctic at the Federation Council.
According to him, the parties agreed "to establish the special traffic regulation of vessels in the Bering Strait". "We have established both ways of the movement, and certain zones where vessels don't need to come for preservation of the environment and the animals living there," Klyuev said.
