The cruiser was founded by the Shinil Group, which had been searching for it for several years. The Dmitriy Donskoy was on the Sea of Japan bottom off the Ulleungdo island belonging to South Korea. "We found the cruiser on the depth of 434 m, 1.3 km off Ulleungdo. We also identified the name of the cruiser - Dmitry Donskoy - on its aft," noted the company. The hull of the ship was badly damaged as a result of numerous shell hits during the battle with the Japanese, but the deck remained in a good condition.

In the near future Shinil Group expects to recover the ship from of the Sea of Japan bottom. The Dmitry Donskoy was launched in 1883 and participated in the Battle of Tsushima where, despite of numerous damages fought as long as she could.

After the battle was lost, the cruiser headed north to Vladivostok, but was overtaken by Japanese ships pursuing the remnants of the Russian squadron. Unwilling to capitulate, the crew of the cruiser decided to flood the ship. This was on 29 May 1905.
